Drops in an Empty Bottle |
Alcohol
can thin your blood because it prevents blood cells from
sticking together and forming clots. This may lower your
risk for the type of strokes caused by blockages in blood
vessels. But, drinking could increase your risk for bleeding
type of strokes, especially if you drink in large
quantities.
Many years ago, I was sitting at my
friend Dave's kitchen table in International Falls,
Minnesota, watching the spectacular "Aurora Borealis"
out his north facing window. We were killing the last couple
of inches of brandy from his bottle, life was good. The
brandy gone, it reminded me of all the years I spent with my
100% Irish grandfather, Francis John Doyle. I remember one
night, sitting with him in the kitchen, the rest of the
family had gone to bed, I was maybe about 8 years old, and
he was telling me about the old days. Growing up and living
with him and my mother during the war (the last real war),
with my father over in the South Pacific, he was the most
important male human in my life. When I was a toddler, I
just could not say "Grampa" or "Gramma",
so I called them "Moms and Baba". It wasn't long
before the rest of the family called them the same. "Baba"
then showed me his "16 drops" theory, that all
empty brandy bottles still had 16 drops in them.
I
told Dave the story of the "16 drops in an empty bottle"
. Dave said, "Now wait a minute, let's test this
out". He held the empty bottle upside down over his
glass and we started counting. "thirteen, fourteen,
fifteen ... and then no more. "Ahah! Dave said, so
much for that theory!"
Then, the
sixteenth drop dropped.
A couple of years ago, my
doctor recommended that I get on a blood thinner medication,
one pill daily that cost $10 . I told the doc that I'd been
on blood thinner for about 60 years every afternoon at five
o'clock, it was called brandy, and did the same thing. "Can
you imagine how much brandy you can buy for $10 a day?"
I said. The doctor had to agree with me.
