The British people would be speaking German now, if it wasn't for Winston Churchill. A recent survey revealed that half of the population has no idea what ''the Battle of Britain'' was about. The invention of photography was announced simultaneously in France and England in 1839, dazzling the public and sending waves of excitement around the world. These astonishing breakthroughs depended upon centuries of developments in chemistry, optics, and the visual arts, accelerating in the decades after 1790. The Niépce Heliograph was made in 1827, during this period of fervent experimentation. It is the earliest photograph produced with the aid of the camera obscura known to survive today. A gorgeous ribeye needs nothing more than a hefty dose of salt and a little black pepper to make it perfect. But what if you're working with a cut of steak that's not as inherently delicious as ribeye? It's time for a marinade. Contrary to popular belief, marinades do not tenderize steak. Both the acid and salt in the marinade can denature the proteins, which will lead to a softer texture on the surface of the meat, but this isn't the same as tenderization. From 2014:The director of ''Captain America: The Winter Soldier'' says civil liberties issues, drone strikes, President Obama's kill list, and preemptive technology are all in the film.

The governor of Alabama has granted clemency to a man on death row for three decades, a rare move that spares the accomplice in a 1991 murder from execution. Governor Kay Ivey, in announcing her commutation of Charles Burton's death sentence, said she could not ''proceed in good conscience'' with the execution because he was not the shooter. She said his sentence will now be life in prison without parole. In 1991, Burton was one of six men involved in the robbery of a AutoZone store in Talladega that ended with the murder of a customer, Doug Battle. Burton admits to entering the store, stealing cash, then fleeing to a getaway car. His accomplice, Derrick DeBruce, shot and killed Battle. Under a convenient law called ''Felony Murder'', prosecutors can charge anyone involved, even remotely, with the murder. Locked up for 35 years, they are now going to execute him. ''CHRISTIANS TO THE LIONS!'' rang through all quarters of the city. So wrote Henryk Sienkiewicz in his novel Quo Vadis (1895). By the end of the 19th century, the image of cowering Christians awaiting their deaths as lions prowled towards them was the defining symbol of Roman religious persecution and the subject of many famous paintings. The 1951 Hollywood version of Quo Vadis, starring Peter Ustinov and Deborah Kerr, enshrined this grisly scenario in popular culture. But, did it really happen? This devastating air raid, part of the U.S. bombing campaign during World War II, targeted the densely populated residential areas of Tokyo. Using incendiary bombs designed to ignite fires, the raid created a massive firestorm that destroyed much of the city and is estimated to have killed over 100,000 people, making it one of the deadliest air raids in history. Males of the species who stay with female mates tend to live longer, although some experts say it just seems longer. ''The Swedish Connection'' tells the true story of an unsung hero, Gösta Engzell, a largely overlooked bureaucrat at the Swedish Foreign Ministry during World War II, who helped save 100,000 Jewish people from the Nazis and transformed so-called neutral Sweden into a moral superpower along the way. Americans are living longer, often juggling multiple chronic conditions. But many adult children don't really know what's going on with their parents' health, until after a fall, an ambulance ride or a hospital stay. What you need to learn about your aging parents before a crisis, and how to broach these difficult conversations.
The Department of Energy was instituted in 1977 with a goal to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. Now, years later, it has 16,000 federal employees, 100,000 contract employees, and a budget of billions, and has failed miserably in what it was established to do. It was an uphill battle for women to be treated as equal to men. The seeds of Women's History Month began on Feb. 28, 1909, with National Women's Day, marking the protest of N.Y.C. women workers who marched through the streets the year prior, advocating for better working conditions and women's suffrage. We celebrate Women's History Month to remind everyone of the achievements of women throughout the years in our culture and society, and to emphasize their accomplishments and pivotal moments in history. A ''Columbia''-Class of American Confederate Navy Warship, The CSS ''Texas'', was considered one of the best built Ironclads of The American Civil War. She was 217-feet long and displaced 309-tons. Steam propelled, she stood 50-feet tall. Crewed by 50, ''Texas'' featured 2-inches of iron plating over 5-inches of reinforced wood. Before she could be deployed (in 1864, late in The War), she was captured, unfinished, on April 4th, 1865 at the Norfolk Naval Yard in Richmond, VA. In the 2005 film ''Sahara'', the CSS Texas escaped from the battle at Richmond, Virginia and was able to head for the open sea carrying millions in Confederate gold coins. The battle at Richmond was real, but the iron-clad Texas was not there, only in the movie. One of my favorite films.

The lingering story of shooting her dog, Kristi Noem was never able to step out of the spotlight during her time leading the Department of Homeland Security. When the rest of the government is gathered together for a big event, like President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, a designated survivor is kept away to ensure someone in the line of leadership succession stays alive. The Iranian terrorist apparatus has had many cells detected in recent years, especially because of Israeli intelligence activity and intelligence sharing with its allies. But Iran has also shown its ability to infiltrate Western nations that possess highly capable intelligence services. The open U.S.-Mexican border under the Biden administration makes it highly likely that some Iranian regime or Hezbollah combat operatives made it onto U.S. soil to wait as sleeper cells, holding for future orders. Lewinsky's stained blue dress itself became a symbol of the scandal during the 1990s. Two years before he died, senile and broke, the disgraced Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna lived in a modest residence in Staten Island. Known variously as the executioner of hundreds at The Alamo, the man who lost Texas, and ''His Most Serene Highness'', Santa Anna was missing a leg and had recently been conned out of tens of thousands of pesos. If that facility draws from the same water system as the community, conflicts can arise. In Mesa, Arizona (a desert city), there is new data centers out of fear for the city's future water supply amid a megadrought. 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned' is an idiom that is adapted from a line in William Congreve's play, The Mourning Bride (1697). The line from which it came is ''Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.''' People usually think that this quote comes from Shakespeare, that it is one of the hundreds of Shakespeare's phrases that have become idioms, as it looks as though it is one of Shakespeare's lines. The author tells us about his latest joy-sparking activity: Watching TV shows with the ''Audio Description for the Visually Impaired'' feature turned on. He's a longtime fan of watching TV and movies with closed captioning, he's not hearing impaired, but those typewritten words on the screen allows him to decipher thick accents, and identify noises in the background. Recently, he tried out another accessibility feature, one for the visually impaired. Married in 1946, they saved their hotel receipt for their $7 honeymoon room. Returning 60 years later, the hotel charges them the same $7 for the room.
Thousands were murdered or exiled from their homes along the Istrian peninsula by the communists of Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslav partisans between 1943 and 1947, most of whom were cast into the foibe, a narrow ravine on the Carso plateau, behind Trieste and Istria. Historical accounts suggest that the women were raped first and often tossed into the foibe while still alive. It was a horrific period in Italy's history that many have tried to cover up, hide, and deny. Kidnapping is a terrifying experience that can happen to anyone, anywhere. In the US, around 2,300 children go missing daily, making kidnapping an alarming form of disappearance. Kidnapping rates vary across states, including those of strangers and familial kidnappings. Motives range from criminal intent to political reasons or personal vendettas. That said, protecting your family and loved ones is of utmost importance. Kidnapping is a serious global crime that affects both children and adults. Certain medications are linked to an increased risk of dementia. But that doesn't mean they necessarily cause dementia. Medications that have been associated with increased risk of dementia include overactive bladder medications, pain medications, heartburn medications, and certain anxiety medications. The risk of dementia with these medications increases when you take higher doses over longer periods of time. Like many human beliefs, the fear of Friday the 13th (known as paraskevidekatriaphobia) isn't exactly grounded in scientific logic. You may not take drastic safety precautions every Friday the 13th, but are you totally immune to the superstition? Given the choice, would you get married, start a new job or close on a house on Friday the 13th? Most Americans wouldn't, even though they don't put much stock in the irrational fear. Some hotels don't have a room 13, and many buildings lack a 13th floor.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, the last standing of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was an engineering marvel that served to guide ships to the port city. It was completed in the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the son of Ptolemy I, the Macedonian Greek general of Alexander the Great, on the island of Pharos off the coast of the city of Alexandria in Egypt. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was a beacon, guiding seamen sailing the Mediterranean to Egypt for fifteen centuries. On a ''MEET THE PRESS'' show in 2014, they revisit an archived program from 1975 where Idaho Democratic U.S. Senator Frank Church discusses and foretells of the 'overreach' of the federal governments' use of electronic surveillance. Etymologically, ''procrastination'' is derived from the Latin verb procrastinare — to put off until tomorrow. But it’s more than just voluntarily delaying. Procrastination is also derived from the ancient Greek word akrasia — doing something against our better judgment. The climate for race relations was extremely negative during WWII. Not only did Negro soldiers feel the hate of our global enemies, but they were forced, both by Army regulations and local policies, to endure severe racial segregation all over America as well. It was in this atmosphere that the Tuskegee's Pilot Program, better known as the Tuskegee experiment, began. As young men determined to prove themselves capable of the challenge they succeeded.
Recently, Trump administration officials reportedly told Chuck Schumer, Democrat minority leader, that the president would unfreeze billions in funding for a delayed rail tunnel under the Hudson River, if Mr. Schumer would push to rename Penn Station in New York and Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., in Mr. Trump's honor. Mr. Schumer reportedly refused. Imagine a landscape with Trump-branded turnpikes, rivers and dams stretching from the Gulf of Trump to the Golden Trump Bridge. The greed of the California tax structure is amazing. In addition to taxing the Super Bowl players for what they earn as a bonus for the game, they go after their annual salaries for the number of days they are in the State before the game, and even tax the value of the Super Bowl ring. Amelia Earhart's disappearance in the summer of 1937 has remained one of aviation's greatest mysteries for nearly 90 years. Since then, explorers and researchers have searched land and sea for any traces of the plane she, hoping to uncover what really happened. But a possible breakthrough in an unexpected place: the airwaves. In 2020 researchers restored a radio system identical to the one that used on that final flight: a Western Electric 13C transmitter and Bendix Model RA-1A receiver. The application of the Fifth Amendment is defined. In the case of Haynes v. United States, (1968) the requirement to register guns has been ruled an unconstitutional infringement for a certain protected class. The good news is that you can readily join this class. The bad news is, you have to become a felon or prohibited person to enjoy freedom from registration.
In 1938, Nicholas Winton was a young stockbroker in London. He was keenly aware of the events unfolding on the continent. Jews were under threat in Nazi-occupied Europe. Anti-Semitism was established in law and violence against Jewish buildings and businesses was increasing. It was clear to many that worse would follow. Winton headed to Prague and hatched a plan that saved the lives of hundreds of children before the outbreak of World War II. The remarkable achievements of Sir Nicholas Winton. The film depicts Nicholas Winton's visit to Prague in December 1938 and January 1939, shortly before Nazi Germany occupied the area, then known as Czechoslovakia. He coordinated with humanitarians to identify hundreds of children who needed safe homes. Upon his return to London, Nicky and his mother Babi Winton worked to ensure safe passage for the children via trains across Europe. Sir Nicholas Winton who organised the rescue and passage to Britain of about 669 mostly Jewish Czechoslovakian children destined for the Nazi death camps before World War II in an operation known as the Czech Kindertransport. 'Doonesbury' predicted Donald Trump's presidential run in 1987, as did Stephen King in his 1979 novel ''The Dead Zone'', George Orwell, and others. Spooky.
Kidnapping involves the unlawful seizure, confinement, or carrying away of a person against their will. This act often occurs with specific intent, such as demanding ransom, facilitating another felony, or inflicting harm. The Islamic Revolution of 1979 brought seismic changes to Iran, not least for women. One area that has come under scrutiny is the way women dress and wear their hair - the old Shah, in the 1930s, banned the veil and ordered police to forcibly remove headscarves. But in the early 1980s, the new Islamic authorities imposed a mandatory dress code that required all women to wear the hijab. These images show what life was like for Iranian women before the institution of clerical rule, and how it has changed. Costco's Auto Program should be as popular as its $5 rotisserie chicken, not too many of its members actually know it exists. The author of this article was in the market for a car but putting it off because he didn't want to deal with persistent salespeople or lose a day haggling at a dealership. Turns out, Costco offers more than just deals on a few specific vehicle brands, basically removes the worst part of buying a car. More money is gambled on the Super Bowl than on any other sporting event, and the IRS is in on every bet without taking any risk.
Just how big is that ego anyway? The Trump administration has sought to pressure Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, to help name New York's Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport after President Trump in exchange for releasing billions of dollars he has frozen for a rail tunnel under the Hudson River. Administration officials have told Mr. Schumer in recent weeks that the money would be released if he agreed to name the facilities in Mr. Trump's honor. Niagara Falls is one of the most iconic natural wonders in North America. It holds a meaningful place in movies, including ''Superman'' in 1978, books, TV shows, and the national identity of both Americans and Canadians. But, there isn't just one ''Niagara Falls.'' The three falls that make up the Falls are two-thirds in the United States. But, 90% of the Niagara River goes over Horseshoe Falls, 10% over American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. In October 1859, the U.S. military arsenal at Harpers Ferry was the target of an assault by an armed band of abolitionists led by John Brown. The raid was to be the first stage in a plan to establish an independent stronghold of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. Brown was captured and later convicted of treason and hanged, but the raid inflamed white Southern fears of slave rebellions and increased the tension between Northern and Southern states before the American Civil War.
Read the lyrics here. ''The City of New Orleans'' was written in 1970 by Steve Goodman while riding the train, and its popularity may have helped save the railroads from extinction. Many performers have recorded this song, but Willie Nelson's 1985 Grammy-winning version may be the favorite.
Knowing your rights if you get pulled over while driving is crucial. You have rights during a traffic stop that can help you avoid a sticky situation and protect your future. While most police officers are good people, almost anyone will jump at an opportunity to make things simple. However, if you unknowingly give up some of your rights, you've just simplified things for the officer. The author runs through a few situations and some of the rights you should know about if you get pulled over. The kilt has its roots in the Scottish Highlands, dating back to the 16th century. The original was called the feileadh mòr, or ''great kilt,'' a long piece of woolen fabric draped over the body and belted at the waist. It served both as a cloak and a skirt, providing warmth and flexibility in the rugged Highland terrain. The great kilt was a symbol of identity for Highlanders, who wore tartan patterns unique to their clans. The great kilt evolved into the shorter called the feileadh beag. From roads and buildings to cars and plastic, human civilization is built on lots of stuff. But roughly how much stuff have we actually created? And in the process, how much of the natural world have we consumed or destroyed? A new analysis finds that on both counts, it's a lot … so much, in fact, that these materials may now outweigh all of the living things left on Earth. After studying over a dozen countries in the southern hemisphere, the scientists concluded that after 13 and a half billion Covid vaccines that were given out worldwide, 17 million people lost their lives from the vaccine alone. And the death rate data for the elderly was just shocking.
In 1888, Alfred Nobel's brother Ludvig died, and a French newspaper accidently published Alfred's obituary instead of Ludvig's. Nobel's life was summed up with the words, ''Le marchand de la mort est mort,''which translated into, ''the merchant of death is dead.'' The obituary went on to say that Nobel became rich ''by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before.'' Nobel was taken aback by the characterization and wanted to change how he would be perceived when he was gone. "Melania," the documentary detailing the 20 days in the first lady’s life before President Donald Trump took office for the second time last year, is set to beat expectations, earning $8 million at the box office in its opening weekend, the best documentary opening in more than a decade. Naturally, Hollywood critics and insiders suffering from TDS hated it.

During the Blitz, St Paul's Cathedral became a national symbol of survival and resistance. Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared that it should be saved at all costs. St Paul's Cathedral, standing proud in the City of London, was a vulnerable target. Its remarkable survival was due, in no small part, to the dedication and bravery of some heroic people.
Thousands protest ICE across the US after Renee Nicole Good's killing, demanding accountability, investigations, and an end to aggressive immigration enforcement policies nationwide, and having a bad case of TDS helped. The streets across the United States were loud, crowded, and angry. A national coalition of organising groups called for a coordinated ''ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action,'' with 1,006 protests and events planned across all 50 states. As early as the 1800s, the United States has seen killers who murdered on a massive scale. Since then, the country has become captivated with true crime, particularly serial killers. Shows like Netflix's ''Mindhunter'' or books like ''I'll be Gone in the Dark'' try to get into the minds of these terrifying killers to learn about motives and tactics. This article lists men, women, and, yes, even families, who were serial killers in every state across the United States. In January 1956, a US Air Force B-25 bomber made an emergency landing in the Monongahela river, which passes through Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It promptly disappeared without a trace. Attempts to locate the plane which was hardly taller than the maximum depth of the river all failed, leading locals to call the plane the ''Ghost Bomber of the Monongahela.'' Every day, between two and three thousand aircraft fly across the North Atlantic between Canada, the United States and Europe.
According to this NYT Opinion Columnist, It's important to know exactly what is happening in our country. Here's how the process works. Federal officers (mainly from ICE and the Border Patrol) engage in extraordinarily aggressive and lawless conduct, including initiating physical contact with protesters or members of the public. The annual fusion of music and politics known as the Grammy Awards left President Donald Trump singing a song of vengeance. Trump said host Trevor Noah crossed a line while turning the controversy over who could be linked to Jeffrey Epstein into a one-liner. Speaking of the song of the year award, Noah said, ''That is a Grammy that every artist wants almost as much as Trump wants Greenland, which makes sense because Epstein's island is gone, he needs a new one to hang out with Bill Clinton,'' Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia. The town is sometimes referred to as the ''opal capital of the world'' because of the quantity of precious opals mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground dwellings, due to the scorching daytime heat. A standard three-bedroom cave home with lounge, kitchen, and bathroom can be excavated out of the rock for a price similar to building a house on the surface, and remain at a constant temperature, while surface buildings need air conditioning. Effective February 1, 2026, travelers who want to board a domestic flight without a Real ID will have to pay $45 to have their identity verified through the Transportation Security Administration's new security screening program. If you attempt to get through an airport security checkpoint without a Real ID, or another TSA-approved form of identification, such as a passport, you have the option to verify your identity through an alternative-verification program, officially called TSA Confirm.ID. A buyer reviewer gave this 5 stars: ''It was an excellent buy. Easy to store under the car seat, and simple to use. Came in handily after I left a work event. Good design, there is no mess when using it. Holds a good amount of fluid and the lid seals tight, so no spillage after use. Simple to clean, just use dishwashing soap and a water hose. It's good for those emergency times when there is no restroom in sight.'' Designed to work for both men and women. The TSA delayed enforcement of this for several years, but now you must comply. REAL ID is a set of federal standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. REAL ID standards help bolster security because they ensure that the documents you carry are authentic and issued under strict verification guidelines. Only compliant IDs or other accepted forms of identification (like passports) will be permitted for boarding commercial flights, entering certain federal facilities, and more.
Don Lemon, former CNN news anchor, has been arrested in connection with the coordinated attack at a church in Minneapolis. Barack Obama's administration conducted airstrikes and drone strikes in at least seven countries, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan, in 2016 U.S. forces dropped more than 26,000 bombs, according to multiple analyses and retrospective reporting. Legal and political defenders point to reliance on older Congressional as the administration's legal basis, while critics argue the scale and secrecy of strikes expanded U.S. war-making by executive action. The political and economic climate of Minnesota has changed since Time Magazine wrote about it in 1973. Now, it is a great State to be from (as in far far away).. Wendell Anderson was a political shooting star who flashed brilliantly across the sky, but came crashing to earth all too quickly – a victim of his own ambition and hubris.
Alex Pretti was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that Pretti approached Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Noem said Pretti brandished the weapon and attacking officers, ''committing an act of domestic terrorism.'' That was a flat-out lie, he was holding his cell phone, as proven by numerous videos, and was shot after the gun in his holster or pocket was taken away. First they came for the office perks. Next they came for remote flexibility. Now Fortune 500 CEOs are exerting their upper hand by issuing employees new ultimatums: Show us your results-or else. This year, in the wake of massive layoffs, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy asked corporate workers to submit three to five accomplishments that ''show the impact of your work,' as part of a revamped performance review system that helps determine future pay. A review by the New York Times editorial board relying on analyses from news organizations shows that Mr. Trump has used the office of the presidency to make at least $1.4 billion. They know this number to be an underestimate because some of his profits remain hidden from public view. And they continue to grow. And, are they upset. 32 climate predictions that have been proven false.
After the Chinese government criticized SpaceX for crowding the skies with Starlink satellites, China has submitted proposals to launch several hundred thousand satellites of its own. Over 200,000 satellites could be launched by the early 2030s if these submissions are approved, with the largest projects planning for up to 100,000 each. Approval will depend on which orbital slots and radio frequency bands are available.

It doesn't matter where you live or where you're going-there's a stunning state park waiting to be explored. National parks get all the attention, but some of the country's most striking landscapes are found in lesser-known, and therefore less busy, state parks. From the caves of Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park to the hoodoos of Utah's Mars-like Goblin Valley State Park, endless places are waiting to be explored from coast to coast. The federal government owes Americans a thorough investigation and a truthful accounting of the Saturday morning shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti on a Minneapolis street. When the government kills, it has an obligation to demonstrate that it has acted in the public interest. Instead, the Trump administration is once again engaged in a perversion of justice. Just hours later, Kristi Noem declared without offering evidence that Mr. Pretti had ''committed an act of domestic terrorism.''
''Point Counterpoint'' was a popular news segment on 'Saturday Night Live' several years ago, with Jane Curtin and Dan Ackroid. When Ackroid would utter this classic line in every episode the audience would erupt with cheers and applause. What brings the pro-gay, anti-Christian, pro-transsexual, gender confused, anti-ICE, pro-invasion, Anti-US, Black Lives Matter, AntiFA, pro-abortion, Communists, Socialists, Islamics, and antisemitic groups together? Hundreds of businesses in the Twin Cities were closed to protest the presence of federal immigration agents in Minnesota, as thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of downtown Minneapolis in a show of solidarity over the Operation Metro Surge crackdown. Community members asked for no work, no school and no shopping, calling it a ''Day of Truth and Freedom.'' Some business owners have called on elected leaders to act to limit immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the state. While ICE needs to do what they are doing, journalist Joe Soucheray wishes it was more professionally accomplished. Joe suggests they ''track the egregious offenders, do your pre-game plan, take steps to know where they are, arrive unannounced, arrest them and then leave just as quietly. We'll never know you were here. You won't be wasting our time and we won't be wasting yours. ICE, you can't win here. Go back to headquarters and a draw up a new plan.''

In a victory for fiscal responsibility and common sense, Congress has passed legislation that will finally stop Social Security payments from going to dead people, a practice that has been bleeding taxpayer dollars for decades. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) announced the achievement. ''We just passed a bill that says if you're dead, you don't get Social Security, I know that sounds crazy, but apparently we needed to spell it out for the federal bureaucrats.''
Two States still celebrate the birthdays of Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the same day. Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday celebrated across the country, while Robert E. Lee's birthday is only celebrated in two states that were part of the Confederate South, Alabama and Mississippi. Not wanting to create two holidays in January, the birthdays were combined, a poor pairing, with one man fighting for slavery, one fighting against it. Gov.
